We LOVE movie night. Whether it’s a cozy blanket, a bowl of popcorn, or the 2-3 hours of peace and quiet, there’s something about a movie that just puts us in a good place. From “old school” days of VHS and DVDs (haha) and now 24/7 on-demand streaming, you'll be able to find any of these picks! And with their connections to real estate, we think you’ll find them especially entertaining and exciting!
"Glengarry Glen Ross" is a 1992 drama directed by James Foley, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by David Mamet. The film features an ensemble cast including Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, and Kevin Spacey.
The story takes place in the high-pressure world of real estate sales in Chicago. It follows a group of four real estate agents who work for a company called Mitch and Murray. The agents are given a deadline to sell undesirable properties, and the film primarily focuses on their desperate attempts to make sales and avoid losing their jobs.
"The Big Short" is is a 2015 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Adam McKay. It is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Michael Lewis, which tells the story of the 2007-2008 financial crisis and the few individuals who saw it coming and profited from it. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt, among others. It follows several separate but interconnected storylines that revolve around a group of hedge fund managers, investors, and analysts who anticipate the impending collapse of the U.S. housing market and the subsequent global financial crisis.
“Betting on Zero" is a documentary film released in 2016, directed by Ted Braun. The film focuses on the controversial multi-level marketing company Herbalife and its alleged fraudulent practices. It primarily follows the story of Bill Ackman, a hedge fund manager, and his campaign against Herbalife. Throughout the documentary, various perspectives are presented. Interviews with former Herbalife distributors, investors, industry experts, and Herbalife representatives are included to provide a balanced view of the situation. Though this film isn’t directly about real estate, it does incorporate similar themes around the properties and assets involved.
"Selling Sunset" - WE HAD TO INCLUDE IT- is a reality (???) TV series that premiered on Netflix in 2019. The show focuses on the high-end residential real estate market in Los Angeles, particularly the glamorous and competitive world of luxury property sales. The series follows a group of elite real estate agents working at The Oppenheim Group, a prominent brokerage firm specializing in luxury real estate. Though there is some controversy in the world of real estate over how accurate and “real” the show is, it can be quite entertaining— and the homes are gorgeous!
"The Pursuit of Happyness" is a biographical drama film released in 2006. It is directed by Gabriele Muccino and stars Will Smith and his real-life son Jaden Smith in the lead roles. The movie is based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a struggling salesman who eventually becomes a successful stockbroker.explores themes of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of one's dreams. It showcases the struggles faced by Chris Gardner and emphasizes the importance of never giving up, even in the face of adversity. The movie serves as an inspirational and emotional tale, highlighting the power of the human spirit and the significance of finding happiness in one's own pursuit of success. A real tug to the heart strings.
